User Experience at SciData
The User Experience (UX) team in the Scientific Data Division (SciData) at Berkeley Lab engages in human centered design and research in collaboration with stakeholders throughout LBNL and beyond. We help scientific software teams and organizations produce more usable software systems and data infrastructures.
Our expertise
The UX team’s work ranges from foundational ethnographic inquiries of work and organizational practices, generative and exploratory design efforts, and evaluations of interfaces, systems, and practices.
Research – UXR
The UX team has supported various projects across LBNL with user research and evaluations of interfaces, systems and organizational processes to generate strategic insights that help organizations better understand and meet their user needs.
Design – UXD
The UX team’s design works range from creating user needs and journey maps to designing and refining graphical & command line interfaces for user applications. The UX team also works closely with other LBNL development teams to ensure proper handoff and implementation of designs.
Engineering – UXE
The UX team also has a core team of UI Developers and UX Engineers who specialize in building modern web and desktop applications for scientific and data-intensive software. UX is an integral part of our development process so that our products are both high-quality software and user-centered.
What is User Experience?
User experience (UX) is the practice of developing services & products that provide consistent, relevant, productive, & joyful experiences for users.
Misconception: UX is purely focused on graphical user interfaces.
Best Practice: UX practices are employed to shape everything from internal organizational processes to all varieties of user interfaces (UIs) & interactions among systems & users.
